In 2006 I painted the prototypes of my easterlings. Now it was time to paint the whole unit which is the backbone of my army. I included some old models which I converted a long time ago. They are not state of the art but I wanted them in my army as a kind of reminiscance. I bought a lot of metal miniatures of the easterlings and I did not want them to be unused.
Due to the extremly stupid mixture of weapons in the easterling plastic box, which was made by an Ferengi employee of Games Workshop, I had to buy two boxes to build my phalanx consisting of 21 models and two spare models for future cataphract riders. A box of plastic contains 4 pikemen and 8 swordsmen and 8 bowmen. Thanks a lot!
The banner was scratchbuilt with paper in an ancient chinese style. I constructed the shape of the banner on the computer, printed it and painted the base color on it. (VMC Cavalry Red, VGC Beasty Brown) . Then I painted the shape of the snake with VMC German Camo Brown on it. Afterwards the paper was shaped and glued on the flagpole with thinned glue.
After drying I cut the teeth with a pair of small scissors and painted the details on the banner. The snake is the same like in the movie although I modified the shape.
I wanted to represent an army banner with that banner which shoul look more impressive than the small ones provided in the commando blister, since it is Khamûls own company.
The Kandish King took me ages to paint. Two horses, two king models, the chariot and at least 6 banners have a huge surface.
I have chosen the dragon for the colours of the king. I developed the dragon in a chinese manner by myself. I really like to paint freehands although this dragen had to be painted 12 times. I am very happy to have finished this model.
I fixed the king with two magnets on the chariot in order to remove it during transport. The banners are not glued so they can be removed either. I changes the flagpoles and used steel pikes instead in order to have a non bending version.
Gold and Red came first into my mind when I thought of the painting scheme. In order to have him more differenciated from the other cavalry models I gave him white horses in a napoleonic manner.
I just bought a brand new camera which is a very good occasion to present the progress of the army. I added a captain of Rhûn, Khâmul and a kandish rider.
The cataphracts of Rhûn are modeled brilliantly and I really love the tiny details. In order to differenciate the model from other riders of Rhûn I added some headband and painted the horse white, which I will do with other leaders as well.
Currently the army list is not finished, so I am not sure who will be the army leader. A king of Khand will be included, maybe that Khamul on a fellbeast could be with him as well.
A birthday present
The first rider model
One of the first ideas for this army was to have only dun horses for the khandish riders. This horse color seemed to be a typical one for Mongols and Chinese in history, which look to me, beeing an horse layman, like dun horses.
The kandish king will have white horses in order to let him look very spectacular on the battlefield.
I was very pleased with this first test model. Asuryan persuaded me with his style theat I get ridd off my Foundry way of painting. Currently I prefer smoother transitions. Thanks Asuryan!
Line Finarfin I was insired by japanese family crests. Like him I wanted to paint a crane as well, here you will find his version. Finarfin´s crane crest. Thanks a lot for inspiration Finarfin!
Individualising the army
I do not want to make that much conversions as I did with my Khâzad and my Goblins since this was really a lot of work. The dwarfes and the goblins were converted that much that I now want to focus on painting.
I decided some time ago to give the kandish king a dragon as his heraldic animal. Therefore I modelled a small asian dragon on his chariot. Please note that the dragon is merely half an inch in height.
The Easterling Captain was slightly converted with a head band, a victory trophy, telling stories about previous battles.
Since Easterlings are fighting in a phalanx formation I wanted to show the rank insignia at the back of the captain. Moreover I added a tassle at the sabre just like I have seen in "Crouching Tiger hidden Dragon".
The second chariot could be steared by a captain, therefore I added a second pennant to the sashimono. In order to use him as a regular chariot too I did not add futher conversions.
These models were painted after the first community feedback. I changes some colors and used more brown and less brilliant colours.
As crests I chose the crest of the japanese Tenno, a fan and a turtle.
Moreover you see a new photo background. This is my idea of the khandish steppe and this piece of terraint fits in my IKEA display case.
This time I tried to paint smaller versions of the crest on the clothing as well. Thanks to all who gave me tips to improve the guys..
The warriors of Khand
The decision for a kandish army was quit spontanous during the grand tournament 2006. Glorfunzel recommended the easterlings since they are very colorful in his imagination with silk clothing and sashimonos and colorful details. Moreover I wanted some cavalry in my army again.
I started with three warriors of khand, the first versions looked promising. I asked some people which color scheme they prefer but nobody could decide. Therefore I followed Glorfunzel´s and Finarfin´s idea to paint every kandish warrior with his own family colours.
Making of
The bases
First of all I tried some muddy version of flat bases which are often used in historical skirmish games. This profed not to be a good LotR way so I dropped this idea.
The second version looked much more nicer, I decided to model dry steppe with long grass. In order to have some modest bases I painted the base itself german grey which worked out quite nice through the contrast.
The easterlings
For the easterlings I used a way to paint red I borrowed from Asuryan. I really like the effect and his recommendation of the wet palette was brilliant. Thanks a lot!
I was quite surprised by the details of the plastic easterlings, so it will be very easy for me to have a quite big amount of them in my army.
