Undercoating

I undercoated the miniature with black.

The jacket

I started with an undercoat in Graveyard Earth to which I added more and more Bleached Bone for the highlights up to pure Bleached Bone. The last highlights are made with a mixture of Bleached Bone and Skull White.

The trousers

I basecoated the trousers with Scorched Brown. I created highlights by adding small amounts of Skull White to the Scorched Brown.

The shirt

I painted the shirt with Dark Flesh. Again I added more and more Skull White to the base color for the highlights.

Belt and seams

I basecoated the leather with Bestial Brown. Be careful when doing so that you don't paint over the already finished jacket. I highlighted the Bestial Brown again by adding Skull White.

If the painting of the seams is to difficult for you, I'd suggest to paint them like the jacket.

The wooden shaft of the scythe

I began with a layer Scorched Brown. This one was highlighted by painting pure Bestial Brown on the higher wooden parts.

Now I added more highlights by brightening the Bestial Brown with Skullwhite.

Metal

I basecoated the scythe with Boltgun Metal and set highlights with Chainmail and Mithril Silver.

The belt buckle was painted with Chainmail and Mithril Silver.

Skin

I started with a layer of Bestial Brown which was highlighted with a fifty-fifty mix of Bestial Brown and Dwarf Flesh. This mixture was highlighted with pure Dwarf Flesh. For the following highlights I mixed small amounts of Skull White into the Dwarf Flesh.

I didn't paint the eyes because it seemed to difficult to me at this miniature. In my opinion painting eyes requires good painting skills, otherwise it'll look awful. And as I know that my painting skills aren't good enough to do that I didn't paint his eyes. To finish the skin I repainted the lips with Dwarf Flesh.

Hair

Hair - Hobbits have a lot of them ... even their feet are hairy. I started with a layer of Bestial Brown. This undercoat was highlighted with an even mix of Bestial Brown and Bleached Bone, after that the hair was drybrushed with pure Bleached Bone. This mixture seemed too bright to me so I washed the hair with Yellow Ink and highlighted the whole thing with a very thin layer of Bleached Bone.

The base

And now creating the base! I did something special with this base: I sculpted it completely from Green Stuff. I can also recommend sand or litter for the base.

Have a look at the Asuryan's article. He describes how to create good Shire-bases.

Have fun with the painting!
