Save the "Balin´s tom" scenario!
I really love to reenact the key scenes of the movie by playing them with the LotR miniature game. Therefore Ertz and me overcarefully prepared the game: Ertz built the Balin´s tomb scenery pieces from the hobby book, I built the scenery from the Moria box and painted the plastic fellowship models.
We were as pleased as Punch since we looked forward to this game for a long time. Sad but true, the game was really annoyin. Although Balin´s tomb is the third attempt to write the scenario for Games Workshop it is incredible boring for the evil side, if the Fellowship is positioned in a special way.
The scenario rules

- Balins Grab von Ertz
During the battle in Balin´s tom a goblin horde attacks supported by a cave troll. The Fellowship starts the game within 3 inches from the sarcophagus and they do have priority.
The goblins start the game without models on the table. They try to get through the gaps at the door. There are 24 Goblins with all tree weapons available, 2 captains an a troll, who may enter the game from round 3.
Moreover every slayn goblin warrior model may reenter the game as a reinforcement.
The door problem
There is a big problem with the door; it is exactly at the gaming table edge. Therefore every gamer has to consider the following:
- Are the goblins treated as reinforcements since they did not start their move on the table? If they do so, they may not attack the fellowship in the same move they entered game.
- May members of the fellowship move up to the edge of the table in order to prevent goblins to enter the game?
- Are goblins trapped at the table edge when they lose a fight? K
We tried the scenarios in three attempts. Read here more about the trials:
Trial 1
During our three trials all goblins were treated as reinforcements. I.e. they could not attack in the round they entered game.
Moreover in the first attempt the goblins were allowed to positon one row of supporters behind the table edge in order to give the cave dwellers a chance.
Ertz put Aragorn, Gimli and Boromir directly in front of the door, whereas Gandalf and Legolas supported them from behind.
With a massive usage of might I could get around the defenders, I used the "journey through the control zone" technic. You may enter a control zone to attack a miniature, but you may move behind that miniature, as you like. In round 5 I could kill Gandalf and there were many many models in the tomb.
My tactic was like this: One model blocked an outer member of the fellowship which left an one inch gap between himself and the corner of the gallery. Then four goblins could sneak through the gap, you can see this quite good on the table.
They height of the gallery is 1,5 inches. Every goblin could move another two inches up on the gallery.
We thought that having supporters is too hard and stopped gaming. We proceeded with the next trial.
Trial 2
The second trial was played with reinforcement rules. Moreover goblins only were allowed to enter the table if more than the half of their base stood on the gaming table. The table ended exactly at the door.
The fellowship was allowed to put one single model directly at the gaming table edge. All others had to leave a gap of one inch to the edge. Therefore the goblins were always able to have tree models on the table.
Ertz used the same line up and within a couple of rounds he could get ridd off my captains. Afterwards he killed my troll in some rounds of melee. Afterwards it was very easy for him to defend the door until round 10. We won with the usage of 5 points of might an one point of fate.
Trial 3

Changing sides, I followed Ertz´ example. I added Legolas to the defending troops at the door and let the hobbits move up to the gallery. From turn 1 on the heroes stood directly at the door, a put my strongest models left and right in order to prevent the goblins slipping through the gap.
In the following round the hobbits supported Aragorn and Boromir from above. Therefore there was no space for the goblins on the gallery.
This line up is a winnig team. Every goblin to enter the scene was slaughtered, they had to fight against high fight values, beeing traped and shot at. The evil player suffered from letharty and was was bored beyond belief.
The cave troll was beaten through distance fighting: Consider the follwing to shoot at one cave troll: Gandalf´s mighty Push, Gilmli´s throwing axe, Legolas´precise shot, stones thrown by hobbits and Aragorn´s bow.
Conclusion 1
This game was miserable. Since Ertz and me are playing a connected campaign, we do not want to have a evil chance to win of 50%, but they should have a higher chance to win than 1%.
In the Balin´s tomb gaming report by Games Workshop there were two main differences to our games: Obviously the goblins were allowed to attack having entered game in the same turn. Moreover the gamers did not use the journey through the control zone technic.
In february I want to offer Balin´s tomb game at a convention. Therefore I urgently need your input in order to get this scenario fixed. I would like to have the same situation as in the movie, therefore a trap door is not an option for me.
Wo of you has an idea how the situation at the door can be modified so that the good side has not a guaranteed victory at hands?
Suggestions for improvement
The Errata by Games Workshop correct the starting zone of the fellowship. It seems that by this variation it is far more difficult for the fellowship to block the doorway. We will test this variation in a few weeks. If other playtesters have had some experiences with the modified scenario please let us know!
Eure Hilfe
